Important notes

  • Masking
    • The Wii Menu makes extensive use of masking techniques. Masking uses a transparent to white image to obscure or show objects. The Wii uses masking in many locations. For our example, we will be using the main cursor files. Neutral shows the basic hand position. Neutral shadow shows the overlap of the shadow. P1 through P4 show the background of the hands, for player one through four. Neutral and NeutralShadow are mask images. Only the obscured part of Neutral will be shown, and the image shown will be P1.
    • To properly create a mask for the Wii, create a png file, which ranges from White to transparent. The Wii supports 256 levels of transparency, which is standard in most image programs such as GIMP or Photoshop.
  • Tiling
    • The Wii Menu also makes good use of tiling. Tiling is a process by which a small image is repeated over a large area to create a tiled background. The striped areas in the Wii background (for example the Wii Settings Menu) are created by this process.
    • Tiled images include most of the files in Background/Tiles, as well as the Background file in Wii Message board. The Background/Tiles are tiled both horizontally and vertically, while the WiiMessageBoard Background is only tiled horizontally.
    • Make certain your tiled images form the sort of background you desire. An easy test is to set the image to your desktop picture, and change the settings to 'Tile'. This will give you an adequate preview.
  • Size Limits
    • You can reduce the size of the .mym by removing all .tga files from the pack. This will make downloading and uploading a little quicker.
    • The Wii System Menu is expected to reach a maximum size limit for your .csm at some point. Currently, themes of up to 22.3 mbs have been proven okay.
    • You can reduce the size of your csm by removing images, or removing the "format" tags from inside the mym.ini file (this will reduce quality).
    • Only .png files will affect your file size. Removing .tga files from the pack will have no effect on file size. Only the csm file size matters.
  • brlyt editing
    • Brylt Editing is necessary for the completion of the highest quality schemes. Brlyt editing support has now been added, with further instructions here.
